Review:
Mental Imagery Therapy for Autism (MITA) is an evidence-based language therapy application that has been supported by clinical data. In a 3-year clinical trial of 6,454 children with autism, it was found that the language scores of children who engaged with MITA increased significantly compared to children with similar initial evaluations. This clinical trial's results can be viewed at ClinicalTrials.gov/ct2/show/results/NCT04108290.
In addition to the clinical trial data, MITA has also received FDA breakthrough device designation (Q210093) and is based on the US patent 20160210870. It offers unlimited language and cognitive exercises designed to last for 10 years.
MITA is currently being used by over 1.5 million children with language delay and has been recognized as the best autism app on Healthline's list. It is available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Farsi, Korean, and Chinese.
MITA is a unique early-intervention application for children with language delay and autism that focuses on training mental integration and language skills. It starts with teaching simple vocabulary and gradually progresses to higher forms of language, such as adjectives, verbs, pronouns, and syntax.
The educational activities offered by MITA are based on well-established techniques. It utilizes ABA techniques of visual-visual and auditory-visual conditional discrimination, language therapy technique of following directions with increasing complexity, and Pivotal Response Treatment. Each activity is adaptive and adjusts the difficulty level according to the child's needs and progress.
The exercises cover a wide range of skills including identifying colors, patterns, sizes, spatial prepositions (on/under/behind/in front), time prepositions (before/after), passive verb tense, subject/object, reading, writing, numbers and counting, arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), logic and reasoning, mental perspective taking, mental mathematics, critical thinking, self-control, attention, working memory, creativity, and playtime rewards to keep the child engaged while learning.
MITA's visual exercises aim to develop a child's imagination and ability to notice multiple features of an object. It starts with simple exercises that focus on one feature and gradually progresses to more complex exercises involving multiple features. The verbal exercises focus on higher forms of language, such as adjectives, prepositions, and syntax.
MITA has been created by a team of experts including Dr. A. Vyshedskiy, a neuroscientist from Boston University; R. Dunn, a Harvard-educated early-child-development specialist; MIT-educated J. Elgart; and a group of award-winning artists and developers working alongside experienced therapists.
Most of MITA's features are free to use and the free version provides access to years of language therapy. However, there is also a premium subscription available for $69.99/year that offers additional features and supports the development of new language exercises that are added monthly.
It is important to note that there are certain terms and conditions regarding the subscription. Tuition will be charged to the iTunes Account upon confirmation of purchase and will automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Users have the option to turn off auto-renewal in their Account Settings after purchase. If a free trial period is offered, any unused portion will be forfeited upon purchasing a subscription.
